8build fundraise with ‘Bake Off’ event

Last week 8build spent the day fundraising in their head office and sites across the UK, raising valuable money for the Trust.

Employees took part in the ‘8build Bake Off and Builder’s Tea’ by swapping cement mixers for food mixers! Staff hosted bake sales for their fellow colleagues offering sweet and savoury treats made at home to be enjoyed along with a cup of tea or coffee and a welcome break from work. Colleagues were encouraged to get competitive, with attendees voting for their favourite bakes, and the most popular crowned Star Baker.

As Construction Youth Trust are champions of diversity, the idea was also a playful twist on the gender stereotype debate – baking is not just for women, just like construction is not just for boys!

The staff used the opportunity to raise valuable funds which will go toward training young people to help them find work in the construction industry. The young people we work with often come from challenging backgrounds, such as Ryan Weston - an unemployed 18 year old from Lambeth, who met the Trust through Jobcentre Plus. Although Ryan had previously earned a level 1 qualification in construction skills he had struggled to find employment following a period of homelessness. After signing up to a Construction Youth Trust programme he successfully completed a 2 week work placement with WJ a UK-wide road marking specialist, and impressed them so much he was then offered a road marking apprenticeship.

It's stories like this which show the value of the support from companies such as 8build. The Trust is close to the hearts of 8build employees, many of whom themselves began their careers through training and apprenticeships. Speaking about the fundraising event Laura Kogan, 8build’s Marketing Manager commented:

“It has been a pleasure bringing our staff together for this fun-filled event, raising funds for an excellent cause that we are passionate about”.

Construction Youth Trust CEO, Carol Lynch commented:

“We’re delighted to have this support from 8build. The donation from this event will help us to help more young people develop the skills, experience and confidence they need to embark upon a career in construction.”

A big thank you to 8build and all their staff who got involved, we hope you enjoyed it.
