Work experience helped Ellie identify her career path
Ellie, 17, was unemployed and referred to us by Bexley Youth Advice in 2024. She had recently dropped out of college, realising she wasn’t suited to the academic environment, and joined our coaching programme with the goal of working in construction. Despite having an interest in the industry, she didn’t know how to get started. She also had reservations about working in the sector, given its male-dominated stereotype.
Firstly, we helped Ellie to achieve a Level 1 Health & Safety Award and CSCS card, both of which are required for working on a construction site. Because Ellie was unsure which roles she might be interested in, we then facilitated a work experience placement with an employer partner, which gave her an opportunity to explore different trades and careers in practice. Ellie found herself drawn to the role of an electrician – a career she hadn’t previously considered but one she felt was aligned with her skills and aspirations.
With a career goal now in sight, Ellie’s CYT coach sought an effective next step and enrolled her on one of our employer-led ‘Insight Days’. This would give her the chance to connect with an employer offering apprenticeship opportunities, take part in confidence-boosting mock interviews and meet inspiring industry volunteers – and proved to be a significant milestone on Ellie’s journey. She found the day hugely motivating and, most notably, met a female volunteer and alumni of CYT who assured her, from a first-hand perspective, that the construction industry is a space where young women can thrive in their careers.
Ellie clearly made a positive impression at the Insight Day as the host employer later invited her to interview for an electrical apprenticeship. Despite stiff competition with over 500 applicants for 10 posts, we are delighted to report that Ellie secured the role! This is a real testament to her hard work and dedication, and we look forward to following her progress on what we are sure will be a successful and fulfilling career.
