Dante’s problem-solving skills opened doors for him
Read about how newly-discovered skills changed Dante's career ambitions
Dante, 23, was referred to us by Haringey’s HM Prison and Probation Service. He was in need of a fresh start and was keen to find an apprenticeship so he could develop new skills and continue learning – he especially wanted something that would hold his interest in the long term. When he heard about what we offer he was excited to learn more and grabbed the chance to work with our coaches through the Building Opportunities programme.
Having met with Dante and given him an overview of the programme, we invited him on a two-week course to work towards achieving his Level 1 Health and Safety qualification. We collaborated with four of Haringey Council’s main contractors to organise this course, so the attendees would not only study towards the qualification, but they would also get to visit construction sites, try their hand at a range of trades and meet inspirational employers. Dante really threw himself into the experiences. He worked with steel fixers and particularly enjoyed the session on bricklaying, which appealed to his practical side. But it was during a landscaping demonstration that his problem-solving and people skills really shone; the industry volunteer running that session felt he would suit a more technical role – something Dante hadn’t previously considered. Not only did Dante achieve his Level 1 Health & Safety qualification, but his self-esteem was boosted by the opportunities to meet industry experts.
After completing the intensive course, Dante was keen to progress further by securing his CSCS card – an essential qualification that would open up opportunities for him to work on site. While studying for his CSCS card, his CYT coach began seeking apprenticeship opportunities with him and, together, they built a compelling CV and cover letter and developed his interview techniques through mock interview sessions. Dante soon felt ready to take his next step.
Dante is now applying for a range of apprenticeship roles. One role identified by his CYT coach was of particular interest – a substation apprenticeship with National Grid. Dante felt this really aligned with his skillset and he was right – he’s already made it through the initial round of interviews! He is full of enthusiasm about his future, and we are certain he will succeed in finding a fulfilling career.
