Local Lewisham and Greenwich young people supported on their career journeys

We facilitated a 2 week programme at Lewisham college supporting young people local to Lewisham and Greenwich to gain essential industry qualifications and develop their employability skills, funded by BBC Children in Need.

Participants learned and revised for their Level 1 Health & Safety and CSCS card qualifications, built their employability skills and discovered more about the huge breadth of opportunities available to them in the construction industry, engaging with a diverse range of professional volunteers along the way.

In our CV, Interview and Transferable Skills sessions, our young people developed the soft skills necessary to impress an employer when applying for jobs and apprenticeships. Most of the young people on the course had no CV or experience presenting themselves in an interview, so the opportunity to build these skills with the support of real employers was a great way to build their confidence as they take their next steps into the working world.

“I want to thank you for teaching me a lot of things that I definitely will need to know and use in the construction field. You really did give us tools needed to succeed in our future.”

In our Careers Networking session, participants asked questions to a panel of industry volunteers in a variety of built environment roles, from Design Manager to Store Manager. Being able to interact with professionals and gain a first-hand insight into the different careers was really inspiring for our young people, who asked some really insightful questions and finished the session feeling motivated and engaged about their future options.

“You guys have helped me look into things I didn’t know existed, the support and care have been immense. Hugely appreciated.”

Through our place-based approach, the Trust builds strong networks within local areas, ensuring that we are providing the most effective support for young residents. We look forward to continuing to strengthen our relationship with Lewisham College as part of our Careers Cluster project, which sees us work closely with partner schools, colleges and PRU’s to deliver bespoke careers programmes tailored to young people’s needs.
