The Construction Youth Trust and Connaught Partnerships are starting a search in South Wales for the next "real" apprentice and is inviting local people to showcase their talent and hunger for a career in the construction industry.
Six trainees will have a unique opportunity to gain hands on experience and qualifications over a ten week period before one person is selected for an apprenticeship with Connaught Partnerships.
‘The Real Apprentice’ is a Construction Youth Trust project and will run in partnership with Connaught, RCT Homes, Rathbones, Penrhys Partnership and Careers Wales.
Throughout the intensive ten week programme each successful trainee will learn basic construction skills by assisting in the refurbishment of a property owned by RCT Homes.
Applicants are not required to have experience within the construction field as they will be working under the supervision of qualified tradespeople.
During the programme of works trainees will work as part of a team to experience trades including plastering, plumbing, roofing and fitted interiors. They will also compete in a number of set challenges to win a variety of prizes.
They will also gain a Construction Skills Certification Scheme card, which can be used as proof of occupational competence, and an NVQ in Construction.
Connaught Partnerships is working across Rhondda Cynon Taf to help deliver an extensive upgrade programme to 5000 houses owned by RCT Homes.
Dave Parry, Connaught Partnership Manager, said, “As an organisation we are committed to tapping into local resources to deliver our contracts and are delighted to be leading The Real Apprentice. Roles within the construction industry have been limited in recent years however we are committed to working with local people to equip them with the skills to successfully work within the industry.
“The Real Apprentice is a fantastic opportunity for someone with the passion and drive to learn the skills necessary to work within the construction industry.
“We constantly strive to have the right team in place to deliver contracts to the highest standards and are committed to improving the communities in which we work, whether it is upgrading existing facilities or offering employment to people from the local area. We want to help to ensure that there is no shortage of the skilled people in Wales to upgrade homes and the communities in which we work for years to come and The Real Apprentice will go someway to making a difference.”
Lisa Nelmes, Wales Manager of Construction Youth Trust, added, "Unlike the television show, this is a case of ‘you're hired', not ' you're fired’ and there are no losers here as everyone who finishes the course will have improved their chances of getting a job in the construction industry. Whilst one participant is guaranteed an apprenticeship with Connaught, we are committed to ensuring that as many as possible get apprenticeships with other companies in the area. Thanks to the efforts of our partners those employers will know that they're getting youngsters with the knowledge and experience they need to hit the ground running and contribute from day one.”
Applicants for The Real Apprentice should contact the Construction Youth Trust firstname.lastname@example.org or 029 2081 3098 for further information and to apply for the scheme. Applications should be received no later than 29th January.
