All aboard The Skills Bus!

The Skills Bus has been at Beachcroft AP Academy helping Year 10 and 11 students explore the world of construction and get them working together as a team.

Participants spent the day building a new wooden bench for their school from scratch! Despite the grey and damp weather, the students remained in high spirits as they learnt how to measure, saw and assemble the various parts of the bench.

It was fantastic to see the students so engaged with the project and so eager to get stuck into the practical tasks – whether it be drilling in bolts or even cleaning the bus! For many of the young people, this was their first experience of trade careers and there was a real sense of pride amongst the students as they all sat together on their finished bench at the end of the day. The bench will now be a permanent fixture in the school, a symbol of what you can achieve through tenacity and team work!

“The day was absolutely excellent – overall, it’s all about teamwork, communicating and being a leader” - Student

When asked of what the most interesting part of the day was, many of the group pointed out the same thing - when Lee from Skills for Employment explained how you could tell the age of a tree by the lines on its bark!  Lee was also very impressed with how the day turned out, and said it was an absolute pleasure to work alongside the students.

We can’t wait to continue to work with the school in supporting its students to discover rewarding careers in the construction and built environment sector.
