Building Bridges in Blaenau Gwent / Adeiladu Pontydd ym Mlaenau Gwent

Please scroll down to read in Welsh.

We have been working with 12 young people from the South Ebbw Fach Valley on a project in the Abertillery area of Blaenau Gwent constructing a bridge on the Ebbw Fach trail in the heart of the Welsh countryside. The young people have been involved in ground clearance and the construction of a bridge over a small river which feeds a local reservoir in the Cwmtillery Valley. The young people started the course on the 10th May with a site visit to the construction area to get an idea of the scale of work involved.

Over the last couple of weeks the young people have walked in and out of the remote site carrying the necessary tools and equipment needed for the specific jobs planned for that day, during the construction of the bridge they have learned various  new skills from constructing dry stone walls, fencing and carpentry. The project has been a partnership between Construction Youth Trust, South Ebbw Fach Communities First Prosperous Team VARTE project, Tai Calon & Willmott Dixon. During the project three young people have secured sustainable employment with others being offered employment on completion of the project and being successful in attaining their CSCS card .

The participants were from diverse backgrounds but all have been able to work with the partner organisations providing feedback to inform delivery both for this project and future projects, the Borough Council have been supportive of the project and Construction Youth Trust hopes that the success of the project will act as a catalyst for projects across Wales in the future.

Rydym ni wedi bod yn gweithio gyda 12 o bobl ifanc yn Ne Glyn Ebwy Fach ar brosiect yn ardal Abertyleri ym Mlaenau Gwent er mwyn adeiladu pont ar lwybr yr Ebwy Fach yng nghanol cefn gwlad Cymru. Bu’r bobl ifanc yn cymryd rhan mewn clirio’r tir ac adeiladu pont dros afon fach sy’n cyflenwi’r gronfa ddŵr leol yng Nghwmtyleri. Dechreuodd y bobl ifanc ar y cwrs ar 10 Mai drwy ymweld â’r safle adeiladu i gael syniad o faint o waith oedd angen ei wneud.

Yn ystod yr wythnosau diwethaf mae’r bobl ifanc wedi cerdded i mewn ac allan o’r safle anghysbell yn cario’r offer a’r cyfarpar angenrheidiol ar gyfer y gwaith penodol ar y diwrnod hwnnw. Wrth adeiladu’r bont maent wedi dysgu sgiliau amrywiol newydd gan gynnwys adeiladu waliau sychion, codi ffensys a gwaith saer. Roedd y prosiect yn bartneriaeth rhwng Ymddiriedolaeth Adeiladu Ieuenctid, prosiect VARTE Tîm Ffyniannus Cymunedau yn Gyntaf De Ebwy Fach, Tai Calon a Willmott Dixon. Yn ystod y prosiect mae tri pherson ifanc wedi llwyddo i gael cyflogaeth gynaliadwy ac mae eraill wedi cael cynnig cyflogaeth ar ôl cwblhau’r prosiect a llwyddo i gyflawni eu cerdyn Cynllun Ardystio Sgiliau Adeiladu (CSCS).

Roedd y bobl ifanc yn dod o gefndiroedd amrywiol ond mae pob un wedi gallu gweithio â’r sefydliadau partner gan roi adborth i helpu cyflwyniad y prosiect hwn a phrosiectau yn y dyfodol. Roedd y Cyngor Bwrdeistref yn cefnogi’r prosiect ac mae’r Ymddiriedolaeth Adeiladu Ieuenctid yn gobeithio y bydd ei lwyddiant yn sbarduno prosiectau eraill ledled Cymru yn y dyfodol.
