02/09/2020So that we remain able to offer high quality school sessions and programmes, we have been discovering exciting new ways of delivering our Schools...
We spent the summer holidays adapting our suite of curriculum based school sessions so that they can be delivered online, remotely and socially distanced face-to-face. We wanted to ensure that no student misses out on the opportunity to experience meaningful employer engagements, expanding their career horizons and challenging industry stereotypes with top organisations from the construction and built environment sector.
For our remote sessions, volunteers are able to join via Zoom webinar as the sessions are beamed into the classroom to give an invaluable first-hand insight into their roles, answering students’ questions live!
“It was brilliant, so well thought out. And considering the restrictions was both informative and engaging. I enjoyed participating.” – Sharon Douglas, Community Development Officer at United Living, about our Forces & Pressure session
We delivered a range of interactive sessions at Harris Academy which demonstrated for students how their curriculum learning links to real life careers in the sector. Our Forces & Pressure session, for example, challenged students to link their knowledge of these scientific concepts and their understanding of the importance of science in designing a new building.
Continuing with the focus on science, the Sustainable Design Challenge saw participants discover innovative ways in which construction projects are made more environmentally friendly, whilst the Carbon Challenge encouraged students to think about ways in which they themselves can be more carbon friendly.
Finally, in the Architecture Design Challenge, students tried their hand at software SketchUp to create their own designs for a school, learning from volunteers in the know about the lesser known technological side of construction careers. Students even had the chance to get constructive feedback from industry professionals in a design showcase, celebrating their newly developed skills!
We are so thrilled that our online sessions have been successfully allowing us to continue to inspire and support the students at Harris Academy, and are looking forward to much more online delivery in the future!
