Budding Brunels Rail alumni on Network Rail placement

Three students (Adele, Suraj and Katie) who excelled on a recent Budding Brunels Rail course were selected to complete a 5 day industry placement with Network Rail and Costain. Network Rail runs, maintains and develops Britain’s rail tracks, signalling, bridges, tunnels and level crossings in the UK whilst also managing many major stations. Costain deliver asset lifecycle solutions across the entire railway and are one of Network Rail’s key partners on the Crossrail project.

Budding Brunels private tour of the Building Centre Exhibition and Office Refit

Last week 3 of our Budding Brunels alumni were treated to a private tour of the Drawn to the Future Exhibition and the New London Model at the Building Centre in London, where the Construction Youth Trust Head Office is based. The aim of this tour was to give to the students the opportunity to learn about challenges faced in today’s urban environment and how landscape planning can create safer and healthier environments.

Budding Brunels on Greenwich Peninsula

The first of three Budding Brunels projects to be run in partnership with global construction consultancy AECOM this academic year took place in Greenwich recently. Students networked with a broad range of professional volunteers from AECOM and Wates; gaining an insight into roles as diverse as Energy Engineer, Urban Designer, Transaction Advisor and Site Manager. For the second time in a month, we were delighted to welcome another minister to visit one of our projects. Transport Minister Lord Tariq Ahmad was kind enough to visit one of our Budding Brunels Rail courses last week. Students from from The Sweyne Park School, Shenfield High School and Seven Kings High School visited Crossrail development sites at Shenfield Station and Chadwell Heath and then the Crossrail Tunnelling and Underground Construction Academy in Ilford to learn about professional careers within the rail industry. Budding Brunels Heads to the Valleys

Construction Youth Trust’s Budding Brunels and Wales teams came together last week to deliver a Budding Brunels programme funded by CITB Cymru with students from Coleg Gwent. Blaenau Gwent is a key area for the Trust’s work in Wales, as a 2012 report by Save the Children revealed that 20% of children and young people in the area were living in severe poverty and 14.3% of the working population were unemployed.

Celebrating our Budding Brunels Students

In October 2014, Construction Youth Trust, in partnership with The Worshipful Company of Paviors, ran a successful Budding Brunels programme with students from the Cambridge Heath Sixth Form partnership. The programme recruited from all three schools within the partnership, and of the 24 students that attended, 11 students were successful in gaining work placements following the programme.

The Budding Brunels programme has grown enormously in the last year and Construction Youth Trust understands the need to meet the ever-changing nature of the construction industry and reflect this in our programmes.
